Leonie and Doug win 2018 Victorian Carer’s Award!

Congratulations to our amazing Foster Carers, Doug and Leonie, the winners of the 2018 Carer’s Award.

On Monday 3 September, Doug and Leonie were presented with the Carer’s Award by Minister Jenny Mikakos at the 2018 Protecting Children Awards. This is highest recognition for a carer in Victoria and they were selected from many nominees across the state.

Mr Sandy Morrison, Chief Executive Officer, BCYF said,
“We are thrilled to see Leonie and Doug recognised with this prestigious award in their 15th year as Foster Carers with BCYF (Barwon Child, Youth & Family). Over this time, they have welcomed 21 children who are unable to live with their families into their home, providing them with a stable and nurturing family environment.”

“On behalf of BCYF, I congratulate Leonie and Doug on this well-deserved recognition and thank them for the extraordinary work they do each day to support children and young people in our community,” he added.

The positive impact that Leonie and Doug have had on the lives of the children and young people in their care is immeasurable. Nothing ever seems to be too much trouble for Leonie and Doug when it comes to meeting the needs of those who enter their care. They always celebrate each child’s individuality, encourage them to try new things, and reach their own potential.

Their close working relationships with school staff mean the children in their care get the best out of their educational setting. Leonie and Doug advocate for the children’s needs, and keep the school updated on any events that may require extra support once they get to school that day.

There is currently an urgent need for more foster carers across Geelong and the Barwon region. If you would like to find out more about becoming a foster carer contact us.
